Hi team. It’s been a minute since I’ve written, but you know, you could’ve written to me, inbox works both ways. (I kid, I kid.)
Actually, I’m here because a friend of mine has been steadily sending out a really enjoyable newsletter and it’s been making me jealous, and what better reason than jealousy to resurrect a newsletter?
The other, probably better reason is I’m lousy at keeping in touch and I know at least one friend will probably read this and like it. So hi, that one friend! We meet again (in your inbox)! I will resist the urge to recap my entire life and work since I last wrote (unless of course you want me to)!
And the other other reason is storytellers. I can’t get them out of my head.
Have you ever noticed that some people are just natural storytellers? You’re chatting with them one moment, and then suddenly, somehow, you’re being regaled with a harrowing tale of something that happened seven years ago? I love these people.
I am not one of these people.
I love storytellers because I find it easier to get to know them. Is storytelling self-indulgent? I don’t care! They’re sharing tidbits of their life with you. I love tidbits. Please share your tidbits with me any time!
Ever since I noticed that storytelling seemed to be a trait that people either have or do not have, it’s made me hyper-aware of whenever a story is being told in day-to-day conversations. And I think, ah, another storyteller. How do you do it?
For me, in the rare instance I find myself launching into a story, I get about five seconds in before I think, oh Lord how did I get here, “sorry I promise this is short,” quick wrap it up, “shoot what was that guy’s name? nevermind doesn’t matter” AHHH!
*cue sad trombone*
Storytellers, I don’t know if you have a skill to be envied or just a lack of social self-awareness that allows you to monologue without anxiety. But I mean it when I say: I love your stories.
I even love hearing stories more than once. If you say “have I told you this before?” I’ll probably say “yes but tell me again.” It makes me feel like I’m an insider once I know someone’s good stories. (OK, I might roll my eyes at the fifth or sixth re-telling, be reasonable. You get my point.)
Meanwhile I will probably never tell you a story during a conversation unless it 1. is ULTRA relevant to the current moment or 2. you ask about it specifically.
But lately I’ve been wondering… what if I’d have more fun telling stories if I was writing them! My preferred medium of communication! Of course!
So this one’s for the storytellers. Here’s to you!
[By the way, if you were just here for the garden updates, I won’t be offended if you see yourself out. I’ll still tell you about the garden from time to time but I make no promises to stay on that theme. I’d better go change my tagline.✌️]
OK, I’m outta here. Gotta go think up a story to tell.
If you got this in your inbox, feel free to hit reply and tell me something good (that happened to you IRL and is at least mostly true)!
Until next time,
XOXO,
A
