Happy Halloween, friends! Just wanted to stop by your inboxes to say hello as we wrap up a very successful spooky season. My family even grew by one niece on the 30th! Baby girl Groves and her momma are doing well in Chicago. (Almost a Halloween baby! So close!)
Andy went as the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and I was Veruca Salt (accompanied by Willy Wonka and an Oompa Loompa). We really cranked things up a notch in terms of festivities (immediately after and, for me, inspired by my Halloween stresses me out post) and hosted a good many friends for spooky cocktail tastings in our basement, went to two different costume parties and a bar crawl, and handed out candy to trick-or-treaters at a friend’s house (where there are actually a few trick-or-treaters, unlike our house last year).
We even had a super-interesting conversation with our church small group (which contains some lukewarm and even anti-Halloweeners) about Christianity and Halloween. If you’d be interested in an extremely-deep-cut discussion from some Orthodox priests about the history of All Hallows’ (Saints’) Day and, essentially, battling actual demons… give this a listen: The Real Demons of Hallowe’en: Special Episode (The Lord of Spirits). This podcast is really fun, since it pulls from a lot of history/archeology/scholarly materials and talks about supernatural goodies that us Protestants don’t really talk about much. I’m not Orthodox so I will give the caveat that I don’t necessarily believe everything they say or reference (e.g. saints being more than just people) but that doesn’t ruin the rest of it for me. Anyway…
On to Turkey Season!
